The Wolds
Lincolnshire is generally regarded as a very flat county, however, nestled to the northeast are the gently undulating hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty in 1973, the Wolds offer picturesque landscapes which are great for walking, cycling and generally enjoying the space and tranquillity of this unspoilt corner of England
Historically the area was the centre of the wool trade but today the land is mostly used for arable farming. People often note how big the sky is when they come to Lincolnshire and if you look up you may well see the Red Arrows practicing their dispalys over the Wolds.
The east coast is a stone’s throw away and offers a range of activities. Huttoft and Chapel st Leonards are quiet, sandy beaches which are ideal for dog walking all year round. Donna Nook is a famous spot for seal watching in winter, whilst Cleethorpes and Skegness are classic seaside towns with donkey rides, fun fairs and fish and chips.
The Wolds are studded with some lovely market towns. Horncastle is an antiques hub, whilst Louth has the biggest range pubs and restaurants, Alford has a monthly craft fair and Woodhall spa boasts a heated lido and the Kinema in the Woods. The historic City of Lincoln lies to the west of the Wolds and is home to the Magna Carter and the famous Cathedral, a visit to Lincoln is a must for any fans of history.
There are lots of activities for children including Rand Farm, Wolds Wildlife Park, Farmer Brown’s Ice Cream, Altitude 44 (high ropes) and Ascend Climbing.
Bigger kids might enjoy motorsport options at Cadwell Park or a visit to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre.
We are very proud to call the Wolds home and have compiled a guidebook of activities and places to visit for our guests and we are always on hand to provide recommendations.
